MI Senate votes to make the Freedom of Information Act apply to Legislature, governor

legislation

There’s new push being made toward government transparency in Michigan.

For the past decade, there have been calls to amend the Freedom of Information Act in Michigan because it’s just one of two states that excludes both the governor and lawmakers from public record request. Leading the push to change that is state Senator Jeremy Moss.

But the reality is that people have the right to know how their government operates,” Moss said. “We’ve been building the case to kind of undo some of the culture around Lansing and our government.”

They’re trying again this year. The bill has passed the Senate on a 33-2 vote. The governor’s office and the state Legislature would then be open to record requests from the public.

However, there’s no word yet if the House will share the same enthusiasm for the change as leadership has indicated this is not their top priority.
