Despite continued reports of an uptick in immigration enforcement and deportations, at this point, Detroit’s Mayor says he has not seen anything out of the ordinary.
Concerns have been shared by groups like the Arab American Civil Rights League and Latino Americans for Social and Economic Development in Detroit. Mayor Mike Duggin says things have been quiet.
“What we are seeing so far is nothing different than we saw in the first Trump administration and is nothing different than we saw in the Obama administration,” Duggan said. “ICE has been arresting people here illegally who have committed crimes and they’ve been doing it for the last 12 years. Now, there’s no doubt that what the federal government is trying to do right now is take officers from other agencies and move them to ICE, which I believe will lead to more and more people being detained.”
The mayor saying Detroit police have reached out to federal partners at Homeland Security expressing their hope that no one would be taken into custody at a school or church because, as the mayor put it, of the disruptions such an action could cause.
