Three buildings are destroyed, but no one is hurt, after a fire early Wednesday in Van Buren County’s Geneva Township.
South Haven Area Emergency Services says it was called out to a property on County Road 687 near 63rd Street around 6:05 a.m. when neighbors reported hearing a huge explosion and seeing the fire. A barn, a greenhouse, and a third storage building were all ablaze when firefighters arrived. Heat from the fire was threatening the nearby home, but that was quickly controlled.
SHAES managed to knock down the fire, and some dogs and chickens in other nearby buildings were not injured. Water needed to be shuttled in by tankers from a draft site at the Gingerman raceway about a mile away, and an excavator was brought in to assist extinguishing the remaining rubble.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and SHAES was assisted at the scene by the Bangor Community Fire Department and the Columbia Township Fire Department.
