It was 80 years ago Monday that Allied troops liberated prisoners at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed every January 27, and the Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills has put up a new exhibit to commemorate the occasion. It’s called the “Evidence Room,” and it focuses on architectural evidence left behind by the Nazis that illustrates the grim reality of the concentration camps.
Holocaust Center CEO Rabbi Eli Mayerfeld had a message for Holocaust Remembrance Day.
“I would say that the biggest message is to learn about what happened so you can understand how it applies in your life today,” Mayerfield said. “Each one of us have choices that we make, and we have to be aware of those choices and opportunities that we have to do the right thing.”
The Zekelman Holocaust Center was founded in Farmington Hills in 1984. It’s the largest Holocaust memorial museum in the state.
