George Nathan Smith, 79, of New Buffalo, MI passed away on Saturday – January 18, 2025, at Franciscan Health in Michigan City, IN. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel – 15 North Barton St., New Buffalo, MI.
George was born on February 24, 1945 in Union Pier, MI, to the late Guy Herman and Irma Mae (Konvalinka) Smith.
George is survived by sister –Shirley Lindborg of Michigan City, IN; and many nieces and nephews. He is also preceded in death by sisters – Linda Lenard and Joanne Smith.
George worked through the years at businesses such as J&J Truck Stop, Brewsters Restaurant and a local disposal company as well as Pine Grove Cemetery.
He shared an apartment for many years with his childhood friend Kenny Glossinger. The two could often be seen on the corner by the stoplight in New Buffalo listening to the Cubs games and offering warm and friendly greetings to the people walking or driving by. George continued listening to the ball games on his portable radio after his friend Kenny passed away.
George was also an avid bowler. He loved bowling or just hanging out at Theo’s Lanes in New Buffalo or City Lanes in Michigan City.
George was a self taught violin player who could play a few tunes for entertainment. He loved to sing and often got the chance to croon a tune or two with local bands and musical groups.
During all the years he lived in New Buffalo he would walk several miles to get to his destination. He would often stop and talk with friends about the local news and events in the area. Many people would also stop to pick him up and give him a ride. One of his almost daily trips was to Barney’s Grocery Store and the Pharmacy right next door, both his favorite information gathering locations. George was a member of Converge Community Church, which he dearly loved. He had many friends and was well known in New Buffalo.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday – January 31, 11:00am, at Sommerfeld Chapel. Visitation with the family precedes the service from 10:00am-11:00am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in George’s name may be made to Converge Community Church or to PACE of Southwest Michigan.
