Experts recommend checking your vehicle’s battery in this extreme cold, making sure you have at least a half tank of gas to stop condensation forming in your fuel lines, and checking the vehicle’s fluids.

Robert Stoop is an auto technician with Midas who says they’re keeping busy as the temps remain low.

When weather gets cold like this, you really got to watch your batteries, the fluids, the coolant,” Stoop said. “If you have an older vehicle, spark plugs, that can cause cold starts and issues. Your tires, air pressure can drop anywhere from 3 to 5 psi per every 5 degrees the temperature changes.”

Be sure to have your cold weather kit in your car in case you do break down. That kit should include blankets, a cell phone and a cell phone power bank.

If you do get stranded, turn on your emergency blinkers, call for help, and stay inside your vehicle.
