Virtual reality is now being used to train Michigan State Police troopers.

Michigan State University professor of family and preventive medicine Dr. Bengt Arnetz says the program is in conjunction with Eastern Michigan University. The troopers are videotaped.

Depending on how well they handle it, they meet different kinds of challenges,” Arnetz said. “For example, what happens if the person has hidden a knife? How does the police react to that? And then based on how the police react, they can learn different strategies to improve the handling of it.”

Arnetz says the training is being held at the state police training academy in Lansing, but they plan to expand it around the state eventually.
