Benton Harbor Athletics is set to exit the Lakeland Conference after this school year due to a lack of varsity participation.

Athletics director Danny Jennings tells us that the school received this notification just a few weeks ago and explained the situation.

“Just the inability to host and compete in events like at the middle school level,” Jennings says. “It talked about the other additional logistical challenges for the other schools. And like I said, mentioned our tournament participation or lack thereof.”

Jennings shared that the athletics program will operate independently and focus on increasing student participation in sports.

“What I plan to do is just serve independently until we can build up the other sports, build up the participation,” Jennings says. “Go to parks, go to neighborhoods, go to classrooms, spend more time in the hallway trying to convince students to become student-athletes.”

The Tigers had recently joined the Lakeland Conference at the start of the 2022 school year after previously competing in an independent conference.
