NCAA – NCAA board chair says there’s agreement that change is needed in how DI is run
The chair of the NCAA board of governors says change in how Division I schools govern themselves is needed, but the real work will come in determining what, exactly, those changes are. Baylor President Linda Livingstone advanced the idea that schools in the four biggest conferences put more resources into their sports and, so, will need more say on some decisions. She said control by the bigger schools of the NCAA’s postseason tournaments, including March Madness, is on the table.

NCAA – NCAA to dole out $1.2B to help pay for House settlement, asks Congress to step in
Stressing his own organization’s ability to pay out $1.2 billion over 10 years to help settle an industry-changing lawsuit, NCAA President Charlie Baker also urged Congress to pass legislation that could put college sports on a better path. Baker wants lawmakers to pass a bill that would make it harder to sue the organization, eliminate the possibility of players forming unions and bring the industry under the umbrella of one federal law instead of more than 30 that exist among the states.

NCAAFB – NCAA president says transfer portal still must fit academic calendars
NCAA President Charlie Baker says there’s plenty of time to figure out the best window for the transfer portal. Baker spoke Tuesday night at the NCAA Convention, hours after Football Bowl Subdivision coaches voted unanimously in favor of replacing the current two portal periods with one 10-day stretch in January starting in 2026. Baker says transfer windows are challenging because they must be built around academic calendars. The coaches want to see just one portal from Jan. 2-12 for the 2025-26 academic year. That would eliminate the current portals in December after the end of the regular season and April when spring practices conclude.

NFL – Commanders go from reveling in first playoff win in 19 years to focusing on Detroit
Jayden Daniels and the Commanders delivered Washington’s first playoff win in nearly 19 years. The celebration was short-lived as they turn their attention to the next challenge of playing at the NFC-leading Detroit Lions in the divisional round on Saturday night. The Commanders have won five in a row all on the last play of the game and are rolling along with confidence behind a rookie quarterback in Daniels, who is playing well beyond his limited NFL experience. Washington is now nearly a 10-point underdog against the 15-2 Lions, who are rested coming off their bye.

NFL – Bears interview former Stanford coach David Shaw for their head coaching job
The Chicago Bears have interviewed former Stanford coach David Shaw for their head coaching job. The 52-year-old Shaw led his alma mater to a 96-54 record with three Pac-12 titles from 2011 to 2022. The former wide receiver was previously an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens. The Denver Broncos hired him in June to help evaluate college and pro players and assist general manager George Paton in roster evaluation. The Bears are looking to replace Matt Eberflus, who was fired on Nov. 29. They have confirmed interviewing 10 candidates for the coaching job.

NFL – Falcons begin search for D.C. by interviewing Michigan’s Wink Martindale
The Atlanta Falcons have conducted a virtual interview with Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale as they began their search to replace Jimmy Lake, who was fired as defensive coordinator following the team’s 8-9 finish. The Falcons on Tuesday announced their interview with the 61-year-old Martindale, who spent 20 years coaching in the NFL before joining the Michigan staff before the 2024 season. The Falcons fired Lake and defensive line coach Jay Rodgers on Saturday. Martindale was the New York Giants defensive coordinator from 2022-23. He previously served as defensive coordinator with Denver and the Baltimore Ravens.

WNBA – Man accused of stalking Caitlin Clark proclaims himself ‘guilty as charged’
A man accused of felony stalking of Indiana Fever star and WNBA rookie of the year Caitlin Clark shouted “guilty as charged” in a courtroom on Tuesday. Fifty-five-year-old Michael Thomas Lewis is accused of repeated and continued harassment of the 22-year-old Clark. WISH-TV of Indianapolis reported that Lewis behaved “very erratically” in his first court appearance. Lewis received a no-contact order and the stay-away order sought by prosecutors that bars him from being within 500 feet of either of the two arenas where the Fever play their home games. The court filed a not guilty plea on Lewis’ behalf.
