No one is hurt, and one man is receiving treatment, after a SWAT situation in St. Joseph Township on Sunday.

The St. Joseph Township Police Department tells us officers were called to the 1400 block of Washington Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. on a report of a suicidal person. They were told the man had claimed to be filling his home with natural gas that he intended to ignite.

When officers arrived at the scene, they set up a perimeter and advised nearby residents to evacuate.

After about two hours of negotiation, the man exited his home peaceably and was taken into protective custody. He was taken to the Corewell Health Lakeland Emergency Department for treatment.

A report on the incident is being forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s office. St. Joseph Township police were assisted at the scene by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Tactical Response Unit and the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety.
