Keep your house warm during the winter months

With the cold season officially upon us, Michigan Gas Utilities wants to remind people of ways to keep their home efficient and warm.

MGU media relations Matt Cullen says with the cold front coming in, there are some easy steps to ensure your home is warm.

“When it’s sunny outside, open any curtains or blinds that are in their home to have that natural heat from the sun’s rays come into their home, that helps warm up your home naturally so that you don’t have to go to your thermostat and make an adjustment to keep your home warm,” Cullen says. “When it’s at night, close those blinds and those curtains. That helps retain heat and cut down on any drafts that are in your home.”

And what are some things you shouldn’t do to try to warm up your home?

“Never use a stove, never use an oven to heat your home,” Cullen says. “Not only is that an inefficient way to heat your home, it also could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Again, that very hazardous and even deadly gap that can build up indoors. It is a very dangerous and inefficient way to provide heat indoors.

Cullen noted sealing gaps around windows and doors, adjusting the thermostat and changing furnace filters, is another way to keep your home cozy and your energy bill down.
