Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard is calling out what he describes as dangerous felons being released too soon, causing a danger to the public.
Bouchard is referring to the case involving Malik Webb, who is charged in a murder in Oxford on Christmas Eve. He’s accused of killing a longtime clinical psychologist. Bouchard says Webb had previously been released early from the system on a weapons conviction.
“There was a Department of Justice study many, many years ago that basically said a very small percentage commits a very large number of crimes, and if they get long sentences, crime comes down and safety in the community goes up,” Bouchard said. “We’ve forgotten that lesson all across the country.”
Webb was arraigned over the weekend and was denied bond. He is due back in court on January 6.
