As we enter the winter season, the Berrien County Road Department would like to remind motorists to maintain a safe distance from snow plows on the road. Drivers are required by law to keep at least 200 feet away from these vehicles.
Berrien County Road Department’s Adri Boone tells us its important to not tailgate snow plows.
“Just like we advise not to tailgate other vehicles, it’s really important not to tailgate when it comes to plow trucks because they are working to improve conditions,” Boone says. “There can be a cloud of snow from their plowing operations directly behind that vehicle.”
Boone also advises drivers against passing a snow plow. However, if you feel the need to do so, ensure it is safe and that you are fully aware of your surroundings.
“When it comes to single lanes, we would respectively suggest give them the space to do their job, wait for them to turn or change their course, and then you can obviously get around them at those points and times,” Boone says. “Realistically, it is safest behind the plow and not to be in their blind spots or passing them when it’s not safe to do so.”
When driving on an unplowed road, it’s okay to drive behind a snow plow, but be sure to keep a safe distance to have a clear view of the road conditions ahead.
