A new project is giving caregivers in Southwest Michigan a chance to share their experiences helping others through art.

The Region IV Area Agency on Aging is planning “Window to Our World,” a public art project with events in South Haven and St. Joseph. The agency says as part of the project, kits are available for caregivers to complete with their care partners at home, or at one of the scheduled events.

Area Agency on Aging planning and community development manager Amanda Drew says the events are for those who would like some guidance from an artist or who would like to connect with other caregivers while they complete their art kit. They’ll be at the South Haven Center for the Arts on January 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. and at the Campus for Creative Aging in St. Joseph on January 24 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Arts and Aging Partnership was launched in 2022 as a way to explore aging topics like dementia and caregiving through the arts. The Area Agency on Aging says it’s “catalyzed a community-wide movement of arts groups, and supporters, to raise awareness and inspire collective action.”

Art kits are available to be picked up during the two events or during business hours at the South Haven Center for the Arts, the Cass County Council on Aging, and the Campus for Creative Aging. There are also home delivery options. The Area Agency on Aging says once the art kits are completed, they can be returned to the same location or be picked up by volunteers.

The final art projects will be put on display for the public to see and experience what it’s like for caregivers in Southwest Michigan.
