Michigan State Police and sheriff’s departments statewide are uniting to bring attention to Michigan’s Move Over laws.

The National Sheriff’s Association wanted to help law enforcement agencies spread the word about moving over — not just for police, but for fire and roads crews as well. Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington tells us about when he was hit by a distracted driver back in 1996.

“Really, I thought I was going to die,” Washington said. “And so we actually just move over. Move over when you see emergency vehicles on the freeway, on the shoulders. Move over or slow down. But you must do one or the other.”

Michigan’s move over law requires drivers to slow down and move over a lane for emergency vehicles. If you can’t move over, you should slow down and pass with caution.
