The federal government is scrambling after a last minute spending bill collapsed this week.
Former President Donald Trump rejected the measure, saying it’s filled with giveaways to Democrats. Elon Musk posted on X his opposition to the bill, dangling primary challenges against anyone who voted for it.
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell was critical of Musk.
“I don’t think someone who since Donald Trump has become president has doubled his wealth and is now the wealthiest man in the world should be able to snap his fingers, threaten members that they’re going to be primaried if they support something that in a democratic process, elected members negotiated,” Dingell said. “And now we’re looking at shutting the government down at a holiday time, which is going to make life harder for a whole lot of people.”
If Congress doesn’t come to an agreement, the government could be shutdown by midnight Friday.
