If you have a family member with hearing loss, they may struggle during holiday gatherings. That’s the finding of a new survey done by hearing aid company Miracle-Ear.

Dr. Victoria Zambrano is an Audiologist with Miracle-Ear.

“My grandmother was significantly hard of hearing and because it was difficult to communicate with her, the family kind of put her at the end of the table off to the side and we would just watch her and she would just sit there eating and not actually engaging and interacting,” Zambrono said. “So I would go and sit at the end of the table next to her and we would talk and I would make sure she could see my face and she felt more involved on those occasions.”

The survey found that about 1 in 5 Americans stay isolated from family to avoid conversations due to hearing loss.
