Ground will be broken Tuesday, December 17 on a new riverfront development in Benton Harbor.
Cornerstone Alliance tells us the Benton Harbor Waterfront Plaza will connect the community to 600 feet of waterfront along Riverview Drive, offering new opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and engagement with the water.
The plaza will include a water taxi dock, a fishing area, a fire pit, and shaded seating for food trucks. The site is intended to be both a relaxing place for residents to gather and also a location for events.
Cornerstone says the project has been made possible through a $1 million grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Revitalization and Placemaking Program, matched by contributions from local partners. They include a $25,000 commitment from the Benton Harbor City Commission and a donation from the Whirlpool Foundation. Harbor Shores, which donated the land for the project, will also oversee the plaza’s ongoing maintenance.
Cornerstone Alliance says the new project is an investment of more than $2 million to revitalize a one-acre site into a year-round hub of activity.
Sitework has begun, with completion of the plaza expected in the summer of 2025.
