Who will run to be governor of Michigan in the next election?

So far, only Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has announced he’s running for Michigan governor in 2026, but a lot of other names are being bandied about. One of them is Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, a Democrat who has not announced a run yet. What does he think of Duggan running as an independent instead of as a Democrat?

It’s an interesting move and I think it caught a lot of people by surprise,” Swanson said. “When you look at the strategies that people use, I think he would say too that it’s a risk. But he’s been in the game for a long time. He talked to people that he believed gave him the best path. So, we’ll let time tell.”

Others being mentioned as possible candidates for the Democrats include Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, and state Senator Mallory McMorrow.

For the Republicans, Congresswoman Lisa McClain, Congressman John James, state Senator Aric Nesbitt, and former gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon are in the mix.
