Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra launches ‘Save Our Symphony’ fundraising campaign

The Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra is launching a new fundraising campaign as it seeks to match a grant.

The SMSO says it needs to raise $150,000 by March 30 to double its money.

The “Save Our Symphony” effort comes as part of the organization’s 75th anniversary. The SMSO says like many arts organizations, it’s struggled post-pandemic, reducing the number of orchestra performances offered while costs keep rising.

Director Jessica Ishmael says with the disbanding of the Symphony League fundraising organization, the SMSO is facing a “perfect storm” while key personnel and board members retired and fundraising slowed just as new leadership and staff came aboard.

Reserve funds have been keeping the SMSO afloat, so this new Save Our Symphony campaign could make a big difference.

SMSO Symphony Board President Bill Downey says the new matching grant opportunity is “an area-wide call to action” that could help the organization get back on its feet.

Anyone willing to contribute is asked to contact the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra.
