NFL – Joe Burrow’s home broken into during MNF in latest pro-athlete home invasion
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s home was broken into during Monday Night Football in the latest home invasion of a pro athlete in the U.S. Authorities said Tuesday no one was injured in the break-in, but the home was ransacked. Deputies weren’t immediately able to determine what items were stolen. Both the NFL and NBA issued alerts to players following prior break-ins, urging them to take precautions. The homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were broken into in October. In the NBA, Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. had their homes broken into.

NCAAFB – Athletes in $2.8B college lawsuit tell judge they want a players’ association
The athletes whose lawsuit against the NCAA is primed to pave the way for schools to pay them directly also want a players’ association to represent them in the complex contract negotiations that have overtaken the industry. Grant House, Sedona Prince and Nya Harrison wrote to the judge overseeing what’s known as the House Settlement, saying that although they are generally happy with the terms of the proposed settlement “there still remains a critical need for structural changes to protect athletes and prevent the failures of the past.”

Golf – Scheffler in a landslide to win PGA Tour player of the year for third straight time
Scottie Scheffler is the PGA Tour player of the year in a vote that had about as much drama as some of his victories. Scheffler earned 91% of the vote in winning the Jack Nicklaus Award for the third straight season. He joins Tiger Woods as the only players to win three straight times. Woods won it five times in a row, and three straight times on another occasion. Scheffler won seven times on the PGA Tour against only the strongest fields. He also won the FedEx Cup. He also won the Masters green jacket and an Olympic gold medal.

Soccer – US men to play Costa Rica in Jan. 22 soccer friendly in Orlando
The U.S. men’s national team will play Costa Rica in a friendly on Jan. 22 at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida, part of two games without Europe-based players that follow a training camp under new coach Mauricio Pochettino. The game, announced Tuesday, will follow a match against Venezuela on Jan. 18 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The games are not on FIFA international fixture dates and will rely heavily on players from Major League Soccer.

Biathlon – US officials ignored sexual harassment and abuse of female racers for decades
Sexual abuse and harassment by coaches and others who held positions of power over women on the U.S. Biathlon team were ignored or excused over decades by officials more concerned with winning medals than holding offenders accountable. That’s according to Olympians and other biathletes interviewed by The Associated Press. While the men climbed the sport’s ranks, these women say they were forced to end their careers early. The women and others describe a culture of misogyny and say they faced retaliation for speaking up. Three of the men denied allegations they were either part of the abuse or ignored allegations of abuse. A fourth did not respond to AP requests for comment.

MLB – Detroit Tigers sign RHP Alex Cobb to $15 million, 1-year contract
Alex Cobb has signed a $15 million, one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, adding a veteran right-hander to the team’s rotation. Under the deal announced Tuesday, Cobb can earn $1 million bonuses for 140 and 150 innings pitched. Detroit is looking to take the next step after it earned an American League wild card this year for its first postseason appearance since 2014. The Tigers swept Houston in the opening round before getting eliminated by Cleveland in five games in their AL Division Series. The 37-year-old Cobb joins a rotation fronted by AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal.

MLB – Nationals win lottery for first #1 draft pick since teen Bryce Harper in 2010
The Washington Nationals will have the No. 1 overall pick in the amateur draft next summer for the first time since picking 17-year-old Bryce Harper in 2010. The Nationals won the draft lottery Tuesday through a drawing of ping-pong balls at the winter meetings in Dallas. Unlike last year, when the Nationals were ineligible after initially coming out with the top spot, they will get to make the first pick in July in Atlanta during All-Star Game festivities. The Los Angeles Angels got the second overall pick for next summer. Seattle, Colorado, St. Louis and Pittsburgh round out the six lottery picks.

MLB – OF Mike Tauchman poised to join the Chicago White Sox
Mike Tauchman is switching sides in Chicago. White Sox general manager Chris Getz told reporters at the winter meetings that Tauchman will take a physical soon and join the team’s outfield mix. New manager Will Venable also talked about the addition during his press availability. The team hasn’t made an official announcement yet. The 34-year-old Tauchman grew up in Palatine, Illinois, about 35 miles northwest of Chicago, and played college ball for Bradley in Peoria, Illinois. He spent the previous two seasons with the Cubs.

MLB – Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg says cancer has returned, spread

The Chicago Cubs great made the announcement on Instagram on Tuesday. Sandberg announced in January that he had metastatic prostate cancer and in August said he was cancer-free after chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Sandberg was the National League MVP in 1984 and a 10-time All-Star during 15 seasons for the Cubs from 1982 to 1997, with 282 home runs and 344 stolen bases. MLB – Dodgers expect Ohtani to be ready to hit for opener, but not be on the mound
Shohei Ohtani is expected to be ready to hit when the reigning World Series champions open their season in Japan against the Chicago Cubs in March but is doubtful to pitch. Manager Dave Roberts said Monday that it’s very unlikely that the two-way star will be on the mound pitching for the Dodgers in his home country. Ohtani had surgery last month on his left, non-throwing shoulder after getting hurt on a stolen base attempt during the World Series. He didn’t pitch at all during the first season of his $700 million, 10-year deal with the Dodgers while recovering from the elbow surgery in September 2023.
