Legislation seeks to limit fees charged for tows

It’s adding insult to injury. You get into a car crash, and then the towing company says you have to pay thousands of dollars to get your car back.

A bill has been introduced in Lansing to regulate towing prices. Cure Auto Insurance Lead Attorney Mitchell Myers says there are currently no statewide protections against unscrupulous towing companies.

There are rates that are authorized by Detroit Police Department in the city of Detroit, but there’s nothing else statewide,” Myers said. “There’s no mechanism in place there to ensure that these tows or entities are actually abiding by those rates.”

Myers said if the companies aren’t abiding by those rates, the only recourse is for the vehicle owner to pursue a civil suit. He says for most people, that’s too expensive and takes too long.

Myers appeared on Michigan Matters, which airs Sunday mornings on Detroit television.
