Sunrise Rotary packing Thanksgiving baskets for those in need

The Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary is working this week to help families around Benton Harbor have a happy Thanksgiving.

On Wednesday, Rotary volunteers will gather to fill 17 bushel baskets Thanksgiving dinners to be given out to those in need. The Rotary’s Robert Gifford has been part of the effort for 19 years and says it takes about 20 people to pull it off.

We’ll put the cans and everything out and carry a basket down the row and everybody will put something in the basket and before long we’ve got a full basket,” Gifford said.

So, what’s in the baskets?

Each one gets a turkey and then we have all the usual stuffing and what have you. Vegetables and gravy and potatoes and anything you need to make a nice Thanksgiving day.”

Gifford says Sunrise Rotarians chip in to buy all of the items.

The Rotary is working with the Flowers Early Education Center, previously known as Tri County Head Start, to identify families to receive the care packages. He says helping young people is right in the Rotary’s mission statement, so this has been a proud Thanksgiving tradition for the group going back 30 years.
