Thursday was World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death, but 58-year-old Robin Schroeder of Petersburg has beaten the odds. She says there can be a variety of symptoms, including gastro-distress.

Schroeder says you have to be an advocate for yourself.

“You’re not getting the answers that are comforting to you or you feel that there’s something still wrong,” Schroeder said. “A common thread among a lot of the survivors are they’re either dismissed or it’s, ‘We don’t know what it is’ and you really need to push for a second opinion.”

Schroeder had surgery to remove her bile duct, gallbladder, and most of her pancreas. She says she’s fortunate to be doing well now.
