Overdose deaths decline by nearly 6% in Michigan during 2023.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the current data shows the decline from 2021 to 2023 is almost five times greater than the national decline.
State Chief Medical Executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian says Michigan has also been a leader nationwide in allocating funds for prevention programs.
“We also have programs in harm reduction, and those are the programs that directly try to prevent overdoses, and those have been very successful,” Bagdasarian said. “One of the strongest programs that we have is distribution of naloxone, which is a medication that can actually reverse opioid overdoses. It can prevent deaths from occurring.”
Since 2020, the state distributed nearly one million nalaxone kits.
