A new CNET report says more than $76 billion in packages could be vulnerable to porch pirates this holiday season, with one in six Americans saying they’ve already fallen victim to the crime this year.

How much do each one of us leave on our porch? CNET Money Editor Dashia Milden has an idea.

$291 that is essentially being left at doorsteps or being delivered to doorsteps this holiday season,” Milden said. “And of course that number will vary from house to house, but when you start thinking about that potentially being stolen and taken away from you, that is a very big deal.”

Milden says 71% of people are taking steps to stop porch pirates, including tracking packages, scheduling deliveries, Ring doorbells, or having a neighbor keep an eye out.
