Van Buren County’s Michigan State Extension is offering a national certification program for those working in the food service industry. The ServSafe food protection manager training class will take place on December 4 from 9 am to 5 p.m.

Extension educator Kellie Jordan says this course is a requirement by the health department for operations.

“This is a food protection manager training course along with a certification exam,” Jordan says. “It’s for anyone in the food service industry, and would include people that work in non-profits or any other food organization.”

Participants will go through a six-hour class and then take an exam. They must receive a 70% score or better in order to receive their certificate. Classes will be taught by certified instructors and exam proctors through the National Restaurant Association. Topics will include providing safe food, forms of contamination, food safety, and safe cleaning methods.

The cost of the course is $75 per person. Participants must also purchase or get an older version of a ServSafe manager textbook.  Those interested can register on MSU Extension’s website. We have a link posted on WSJM.com.
