It turns out a lot of grandparents are taking care of their grandkids these days, and it’s good for them, according to a new University of Michigan poll.
The national poll on healthy aging shows 49% of grandparents watch their grandchildren, and 20% do so at least once a week. While it’s good for the grandkids, the poll’s Kate Bauer says it’s good for the grandparents too.
“I think we can say that caring, if you’re able to care for a grandchild or you’re able to be in the life of a grandchild, it’s a pretty healthy, positive thing for older adults,” Bauer said.
Bauer says it protects the mental health of grandparents, decreases loneliness, and gives them purpose.
