A recession is not expected in west Michigan anytime soon.

Researcher Brian Long with Grand Valley State University says the university’s latest survey of the economy is still marginally negative, but not negative enough to foreshadow a recession. However, he notes that consumer surveys can be unpredictable.

Last month, the consumer survey from the conference board concluded that the consumer confidence dipped rather sharply, but this month it bounced back again very nicely,” Long said. “These types of consumer surveys tend to be partially driven by the news cycle.”

Long notes one month doesn’t make a trend, but we can hope that the trend will continue next month.
