People rallied outside the Michigan Capitol Tuesday, calling for passage of the Second Look Sentencing Act.
The Second Look Sentencing Act are bills that would give jailed persons a chance to petition their sentencing judge for a reduction of their sentence after serving at least 20 years, provided they are no longer deemed a risk to the community.
Chuck Warpehoski of the Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration says there are some reasons to do it.
“We have insufficient corrections officers to serve the incarcerated population,” Warpehoski said. “We have budget constraints. The only way we can solve these is if the people who have already served a long prison sentence, already paid their debt and have rehabilitated, if we give them a chance to come home and rather than costing taxpayers money, be able to give back to our economy and contribute to society.”
Warpehoski says there would be exclusions for mass shooters and there are talks to possibly exclude some others.
