New scams are popping up all of the time, and now a Grand Rapids couple almost got scammed by voice cloning.
The couple almost got conned when a caller said their daughter was in danger using their daughter’s voice and asking for money to help her. The Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan’s Katie Grevious says they called their daughter and she was not in trouble.
How are scammers doing this?
“The internet is a really great place, but it’s also a place that stores a lot of information about us that we may not know,” Grevious said. “So if there was at any time that you maybe recorded your voice or there was a video of you anywhere saved anywhere on the internet — a video, a social media page — scammers can take that and they can use AI to create near similar voices.”
Grevious says if you get such a call, call your loved one to find out if there is a problem. She says don’t send money when someone is asking you to over the phone.
