This Sunday marks 49 years since the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The annual memorial ceremony will not be open to the public this year. Instead, it will be streamed online.
Corey Adkins with the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society says next year will be different, but they will still put a focus on the real meaning of the anniversary.
“We’re doing this for a reason,” Adkins said. “It’s not to keep the public out, but it’s to give the family members the family members the time they deserve to remember their loved ones who were lost on the Edmunds.”
The Fitzgerald sank 17 miles northwest of Whitefish Point on November 10, 1975. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the event.
