NFL – Newly acquired Za’Darius Smith will report to Lions on Friday
The Detroit Lions didn’t acquire Za’Darius Smith to win just any game. They got him to win a Super Bowl. That’s why, in an unusual move, they welcomed their new defensive end to town by sending him home. Smith won’t report to the Lions until Friday and coach Dan Campbell isn’t sure if he will play on Sunday night against the Houston Texans.  The Lions will also get wide receiver Jameson Williams back after his two-game suspension.

NFL – Bears WR Moore says he left the field midplay because he was hurt, not frustrated
Chicago Bears receiver DJ Moore insisted he left the field during a play last weekend because he was hurt — not frustrated. Moore says he went to the sideline because he rolled his ankle when he cut back toward scrambling quarterback Caleb Williams in the opening minutes of a 29-9 loss at Arizona. The Bears had the ball at midfield when Williams dropped back and rolled to his left as he was being chased. Moore cut back toward his quarterback near the sideline. He hopped as he stepped out of bounds, walked toward the bench and took a seat. But the play wasn’t over. Williams spun away from a defender and rolled toward the other side before firing an incomplete pass to Keenan Allen. Moore remained in the game.

MLB – Kyle Hendricks and Angels agree to $2.5 million, 1-year contract, AP source says
A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that right-hander Kyle Hendricks and the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a $2.5 million, one-year contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical. Hendricks had spent his entire big league career with the Chicago Cubs, going 97-81 with a 3.68 ERA in 270 starts and six relief appearances over 11 seasons. He was the last Cubs player remaining from their 2016 World Series champions, who won the team’s first title since 1908.

MLB – Dodgers not counting on Ohtani to pitch at the start of next season after surgery
The Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t counting on Shohei Ohtani to pitch at the start of next season and will wait to see how his rehabilitation progresses following shoulder surgery on his non-throwing arm. Ohtani had a procedure Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, an injury sustained while sliding during a stolen base attempt in Game 2 of the World Series on Oct. 26. The two-way star did not pitch this year while recovering from elbow surgery on Sept. 19, 2023. General manager Brandon Gomes says the Dodgers are "going to let the rehab process play out.”
