There’s a new resident inspector at the Cook nuclear power plant in Bridgman.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it’s selected Zackery Helgert to be its in-house point person at the facility.

Helgert joined the NRC in 2022 as part of the commission’s Regulator Apprenticeship Network program. He completed apprenticeships as a technical reviewer for advanced reactors and shadowed a reactor and materials inspector. He also spent time as acting resident inspector for the NRC at the Dresden nuclear power plant in Morris, Illinois.

Helgert has a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The NRC says each nuclear power plant in the country has at least two resident inspectors who monitor plant operations each day. They serve as the agency’s eye and ears at the facilities.
