State Representative Joey Andrews is thanking those who voted for him this week.

Andrews tells us he’s the first Democrat to ever win reelection in the Michigan House in Southwest Michigan. He believes getting out in the community and addressing issues that affect residents of the district has had an effect.

Andrews says the election was a mixed bag for Democrats.

I think despite the fact that we had a rough night nationally, there was actually a lot of positive local results,” Andrews said. “We flipped the township board in New Buffalo Township to now a Democratic majority. And we actually, I think, saw Berrien County and a lot of our races do better than four years ago, even, for a lot of the Democrats here.”

Andrews says Democrats will control the state Senate and governorship, but Republicans have taken the state House. Work to address things like the minimum wage will have to start soon.

Some of that stuff we’re going to have to tackle before the end of the year, the minimum wage and paid leave stuff in particular. But I’m expecting we’re going to have a very active few weeks of legislative session.”

Once the new term starts, Andrews says the Republicans and Democrats will have to work together to accomplish anything.

Andrews says he won this week by more than he did in the last election, and he’s pledging to voters to continue working on issues that matter in Southwest Michigan.
