Police identify victim in Eau Claire shooting

Police have released the names of the victim and the suspect in a weekend shooting in Eau Claire.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says it responded to Main Street and Elm Street in the village of Eau Claire around 12:45 a.m. Saturday on a report of a shooting. Deputies arrived on scene and found a male victim who was shot and unresponsive with life-threating injuries. A second male victim who had been shot and had non-life threatening injuries was also found.

First responders rendered aid to both the victims and they were transported to Corewell Health South Hospital where one victim was pronounced dead.

Thanks to witnesses, a suspect was quickly identified and arrested.

The sheriff’s department now says the victim in the incident was 36-year-old Chad Nathen Medlin of Benton Harbor. The suspect in the shooting has been identified as 47-year-old Rigoberto Gomez. He is now lodged at the Berrien County Jail.
