MDOT reminds motorists to stay alert as clocks go back

As we gear up to turn our clocks back an hour on Sunday, the Michigan Department of Transportation and Michigan Fitness Foundation reminds drivers to watch out and be mindful.

MDOT spokesperson Michael Frezell notes as it gets darker earlier in the evening it’s important to pay close attention to your surroundings.

“People need to be aware of others on the road, particularly bicyclists, people walking, on skateboards, wheelchairs, or any other personal device.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,522 pedestrians and 1,105 bicyclists died in traffic crashes in 2022. Frezell tells us people walking or riding their bikes, especially kids, should wear something reflective to stand out in the darkness.

“For kids that are doing extracurricular activities at night, be careful out there,” Frezell says. “When you come to an intersection or try to cross at a crosswalk so that you are visible to the motorist. Also, look at them in the eyes so you know they’ve acknowledged your presence there before you cross the street.”

MDOT also wants to remind drivers of the distracted driving law prohibiting phone use behind the wheel. Frezell said drivers must be alert and eliminate distractions to reach their destination safely.
