A number of blueberry farms in Southwest Michigan were sold, and are now being purchased by 11 unique buyers.

The auction, which began in late September, closed on October 15, comprised of 12 farms that covered about 647 acres.

Peoples Company listing agent Bryan Bergdale tells us some of the sold land will continue to be used as blueberry farms while the others will be transformed into something new.

“Half are going to remain blueberries, and then I would say approximately half would be converted into some other form of crop, whether it be out of a corn-soybean rotation or some other form of vegetable, just depending on the buyer.”

Bergdale also says some of the smaller farms, or tracts, could be transformed into homes. He did note that the sales were stronger than expected, about 20% higher. The majority of the tracts are located within 5 miles of Lake Michigan and range near Fennville, Bangor, Covert, and South Haven.

The tracts ranged from as small as 5 acres and as large as 119 acres.
