Registration for November 5 election now in-person only

If you still haven’t registered to vote in the November 5 election, it is no longer possible to do so without going in person to a clerk’s office.

Berrien County Elections Administrator Kathryn Klemesrud tells us the last day to register online or via mail was Monday. To register now, you must go to your local clerk’s office. Be sure to bring proof of address.

Klemesrud says registration is also allowed on Election Day itself, although, again, only in person.

“If they show up on Election Day, they’ll have to prove their residency with the local clerk, and then they’ll be given a receipt and they’ll take that receipt to their polling place because not every polling place is actually in the local township hall,” Klemesrud said. “So, they’ll have to take their receipt with them to the polling place, and the receipt will direct to the election inspector as to what type of ballot that voter is to receive.”

For those who want to vote absentee, November 1 will be the last day an absentee ballot can be requested by mail. However, such voters will have to drop off the ballot with the clerk’s office in person if they want it to be counted.

Anyone with questions should just call their local clerk.
