Broadband project in the works in Hagar Township

There’s a high-speed internet project in the works in Hagar Township.

Township Supervisor Izzy DiMaggio tells us Surf Internet has made a proposal to township leaders.

We just had a meeting with Surf Internet today,” DiMaggio said Thursday. “They are going to look at the Lake Michigan Beach area. This is strictly for internet service. It’s not for telephone, TV, and so forth. And it sounds like a pretty good idea because they targeted an area in Lake Michigan Beach where it’s not high-speed internet.”

DiMaggio says Surf Internet is looking to hook up about 500 homes along the lakeshore. That’s where most of the unserved homes in the township are located.

DiMaggio says Hagar Township has previously worked with Midwest Energy and Communications to close the digital divide for its residents, and that effort is just about completing the job. However, there is still that underserved pocket near Lake Michigan.

DiMaggio says the Surf Net proposal comes at no cost to the township, so the board of trustees may soon approve a permit for it to proceed.

Surf Internet has also been installing broadband in Bridgman, Watervliet, and Bainbridge Township.
