Bills 23, Jets 20 – Allen and Bills overcome Rodgers’ Hail Mary and beat Jets 23-20 to take control in AFC East
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills overcame a Hail Mary touchdown throw by Aaron Rodgers as the first half ended to beat the New York Jets 23-20 and take control of the AFC East. Allen threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and Tyler Bass made up for an earlier miss by kicking a go-ahead 22-yard field goal with 3:43 left to help the Bills snap a two-game skid. The loss was the third in a row for the Jets, who capped a tumultuous week during which coach Robert Saleh was fired, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich replaced him as the interim coach and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was demoted from play-calling duties in favor of Todd Downing.

NFL – Lions try to stay positive after losing Aidan Hutchinson to broken leg
The Detroit Lions should have been in a celebratory mood. After all, they had just beaten the Dallas Cowboys 47-9. It was their most dominant performance of the Dan Campbell era. Fox broadcaster Tom Brady said he believed they were the best team in the NFC. Instead, they are dealing with the broken leg suffered by star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. The Lions announced Monday morning that Hutchinson had the surgery at Baylor White Medical Center in the Dallas area. He will return to Detroit this week and was expected to make a full recovery. Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that the surgery “went great” and he is likely out four-to-six months.

NFL – Williams and the Bears are looking good at their bye at 4-2 with 3 straight wins
Caleb Williams and the Bears cruised into their bye with a 4-2 record and three straight wins following a 35-16 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Chicago is on its best run since taking three in a row in late 2020 and has a chance to make it four straight for the first time since 2018, when they won the NFC North title. The Bears will try to keep this run going in Week 8 when they visit Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in a matchup of quarterbacks taken with the top two picks in this year’s draft.

Lindor added to his storybook season with a leadoff homer in the first inning against Ryan Brasier. Viento delivered during New York’s five-run second, connecting for a grand slam against Landon Knack. Before Lindor went deep, Los Angeles had a string of 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Jack Flaherty led the Dodgers to a 9-0 victory in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night.

Yankees 5, Guardians 2 – Soto, Stanton homers back Rodón as Yankees take advantage of wild Guardians to win 5-2
Juan Soto homered during New York’s three-run third inning, Carlos Rodón got his first postseason win and the Yankees took advantage of Cleveland’s wildness in a 5-2 victory in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series. Cleveland became only the second team to throw a pair of run-scoring wild pitches in a postseason inning and tied a postseason record with five overall. NBA – Pistons aim for respect after NBA’s worst record for 2nd straight year
The Detroit Pistons have had the NBA’s worst record the past two year and it’s difficult to imagine a turnaround this season. Detroit hired president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon and coach J.B. Bickerstaff to replace the fired Troy Weaver and Monty Williams. While the team did not lose any players of particular significance, they did add some veterans: Tobias Harris, Malik Beasley, Tim Hardaway Jr. The Pistons open the season Oct. 23 at home against Indiana.

NBA – Bulls enter season with a different look and a big question about LaVine’s future
The Chicago Bulls come into the season with a different look after breaking up their core. They also have a big question when it comes to Zach LaVine’s future. Six-time All-Star DeRozan went to Sacramento in a three-team, sign-and-trade, and Caruso got dealt to Oklahoma City for Josh Giddey. But LaVine remains in Chicago at least for now. The two-time All-Star is back after having season-ending surgery in February for a foot injury that limited him to 25 games. He is in the middle of a five-year, $215.16 million contract extension he signed after 2021-22 season that makes him difficult to trade.

NBA – Pacers counting on continuity and motivation to make a deeper run this season
The Indiana Pacers liked what they saw so much during last season’s Eastern Conference run, they decided to run it back. All-NBA guard Tyrese Haliburton, the league assist leader, will lead the way again after returning from the Paris Olympics with a gold medal. All-NBA forward Pascal Siakam is expected to be better in his first full season with the Pacers. And the return of guard Bennedict Mathurin from shoulder surgery could give the league’s highest-scoring team a big boost. The Pacers are also motivated to silence the doubters who insist season’s playoff run was a fluke.

NCAAMBB – Kansas tops AP Top 25 preseason men’s basketball poll
Kansas is No. 1 in the AP Top 25 preseason men’s basketball poll ahead of Alabama and two-time defending national champion UConn. The Jayhawks got 30 of 60 first-place votes while the Crimson Tide received 14 and the Huskies got 11. Houston and Iowa State round out the top five, followed by Gonzaga, Duke, Baylor, North Carolina and Arizona. The Big 12 has half of the top 10 teams but the SEC has the most in the Top 25 overall with nine. That includes No. 16 Arkansas, led by new coach John Calipari, and No. 23 Kentucky, where Mark Pope replaced him.

WNBA – WNBA and players’ union closing in on opt out date for current CBA
The WNBA had a record year in terms of growth in viewership and attendance, and with that the players now want a bigger piece of the financial pie. The players union and league have until Nov. 1 to potentially opt out of their current collective bargaining agreement. It is likely that the players will decide to do so before the deadline as they have a list of wants, including increased salaries now that the WNBA has entered a historic 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime and NBC for $200 million a year. If the union does opt out, the current CBA, will still be in effect next season.
