In recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month, Coloma schools is inviting Berrien County Prosecutor Amy Byrd to talk about cell phone use.
Coloma high school principal Craig Fisher tells us this event will be to help inform students of the right ways to use their cellular devices and social media.
“We thought it was important, especially with our current process of where we are in society with social media. We want our students to know not only how to use it, but also how to handle it responsibly and to know what the ramifications were if they didn’t.”
As phones continue to be a distraction in the classroom, Fisher tells us at Coloma High School they don’t allow phones in the classrooms. He hopes that Byrd’s message helps them to understand the consequences of misusing social media and their phones.
“There are real life consequences and some of the times we don’t think about them in spur of the moment. Sometimes we need to not press send messages and just be careful that they’re the ones that have to be responsible for their own safety too. They play a part in that.”
Byrd will be paying a visit to the high school on Tuesday. She tells us “educating students on real world implications of the decisions they make every day while using cell hones and social media is critical to promote a safe school environment and to ensure they enter adulthood with a clean record and digital reputation.”
