One of the Congressional races in Michigan this year is the Fifth District, which runs across the southern border of the state and includes roughly the southern half of Berrien County.

Some of the larger areas of the district include Bedford Township, Jackson, and Blackmon Township. Republican Tim Walberg is the incumbent. Running against him is Democrat Libby Urban, who has a background working in maintenance in a steel mill and then moving up the ranks. She has some thoughts on tariffs.

I understand how tariffs work being in the steel industry,” Urban said. “Tariffs can be good to protect American industry, but we have to be very careful when we do use tariffs.”

Urban says in the past, tariffs have helped the steel industry and that losing it would have been a national security risk. She says one of the issues she frequently hears about is unique to this district.

Climate change has really been affecting us this year. We’ve seen more severe and extreme weather across our district than we’ve seen in quite a while. We have issues with landowner rights. There’s this controversy over land use and solar fields.”

Urban says she also hears a lot about the economy, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, abortion, and healthcare. She says she supports a woman’s right to choose.

Meanwhile, Walberg in general has been critical of Biden administration policies, saying they have has cut into our nation’s security and prosperity. Walberg says his main priorities are expanding economic opportunities, encouraging job at creation, and raising incomes.
