Tigers 3, Guardians 0 – Carpenter’s 3-run homer off Clase sends gritty Tigers to 3-0 win over Guardians in Game 2
Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer off Cleveland’s All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Guardians 3-0 in Game 2 to even their AL Division Series at one game apiece. Carpenter connected for a 423-foot shot with two outs off Clase, who had not given up a run since Aug. 30 and led the league with 47 saves. Detroit ace Tarik Skubal pitched seven shutout innings. Carpenter’s homer was the first runs of the series for the Tigers, who have been finding ways to win for months. They’re at it again and will now head home to Comerica Park for Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Thursday with a chance to advance.

MLB – Carpenter becomes October star as homer off Clase sends Tigers to 3-0 win
Kerry Carpenter took one swing and floored baseball’s preeminent closer. Carpenter connected for a three-run homer off Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning, sending the Detroit Tigers to a dramatic 3-0 win over the Guardians in Game 2 on Monday night. Carpenter drove a 2-2 pitch from usually unhittable Clase 423 feet into the right-field seats. It was another one of those October moments that can define a player, and the fact he did it off Clase wasn’t lost on Carpenter. He’s the first player to hit a two-out, two-strike homer in the ninth inning since Kirk Gibson’s memorable shot off Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.
MLB – Dominant closer Clase gives up 3-run homer in 9th as Tigers shock Guardians
Emmanuel Clase’s nearly perfect season is now flawed. Cleveland’s All-Star closer, who spent the past six months dominating like no other pitcher in the majors, gave up a three-run homer to Detroit’s Kerry Carpenter with two outs in the ninth inning as the Tigers shocked the Guardians 3-0 in Game 2 of the ALDS. Pitching a second inning for just the second time in 2024, Clase showed that even he can be beaten. Clase left a slider over the plate to Carpenter, whose homer was just the third allowed by the right-hander this season. Clase saved 47 games during the regular season and finished 0.61 ERA.

Chiefs 26, Saints 13 – Mahomes throws for 331 yards, Carr hurt as Chiefs shut down Saints for 26-13 victory
Patrick Mahomes threw for 331 yards, Kareem Hunt ran for 102 yards and a touchdown, and the Chiefs overcame more red-zone woes to beat the Saints 26-13 on a big night for Kansas City’s professional sports teams. Just as the Chiefs were moving to 5-0, the Royals were beating the Yankees 4-2 in New York to even their AL Division Series at a game apiece. Derek Carr threw for 185 yards with two touchdowns and a pick for New Orleans before leaving with an oblique injury. It occurred with about 9 1/2 minutes left, when Carr was hit on a fourth-down incompletion as he tried to rally New Orleans from a 23-13 deficit.
NFL – Williams and the Bears have another big opportunity after dominating the Panthers
Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears did exactly what they wanted against one of the worst teams in the NFL. They have another big opportunity this week. The Bears meet a struggling team again when they face Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars in London after dominating the lowly Carolina Panthers 36-10 on Sunday. Chicago set season highs in scoring and yards with 424 and turned three takeaways into 16 points. It led to the Bears’ second straight win after back-to-back losses and their most lopsided victory since a 29-3 romp over the New York Giants in Week 17 of the 2021 season.
Milton – Hurricane Milton forces NFL, NHL and other sports to adjust game plans
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are planning to relocate to the New Orleans area to prepare for Sunday’s game against the Saints with Hurricane Milton expected to make landfall along Florida’s west coast this week. The Bucs intend to travel Tuesday and spend the rest of the week out of state instead of practicing as usual at the team’s training facility in Tampa. Milton strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico on Monday and could make landfill in the Tampa Bay area Wednesday. The NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning canceled Monday night’s scheduled preseason finale against the Nashville Predators.

NHL – A more comfortable Bedard is hoping for a big second season with the Blackhawks
Connor Bedard is usually one of the first players on the ice and one of the last players to leave when practice is over. In many ways, Bedard is the same guy as he begins his second season with the Chicago Blackhawks. In some subtle ways, he is a different person and player than he was a year ago. Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno says Bedard “is more comfortable in his skin” than he was during his rookie year. The 19-year-old Bedard says he is looking forward to applying everything he has learned so far in his second season in the league.
NCAA – NCAA’s $2.78B settlement to allow athlete payments gets preliminary approval
A judge has given preliminary approval to the $2.78 billion legal settlement that figures to transform college sports. U.S District Judge Claudia Wilken released an order Monday setting a timeline for a deal that would put millions of dollars into the pockets of college athletes, who can begin applying for payment on Oct. 18. A final hearing is set for April 2025. If finalized, the deal would allow the biggest schools to establish a pool of about $21.5 million in the first year to distribute money to athletes. Players would still be able to cut name, image and likeness deals with outside groups.
NCAAHKY – NCAA weighs change to allow CHL players to compete on US college teams
The NCAA Division I Council is considering making a landmark change in eligibility rules this week that would allow Canadian Hockey League players to compete at U.S. colleges, the American Hockey Coaches Association executive director said Monday. The development comes on the heels of a class-action lawsuit filed Aug. 13 in U.S. District Court in New York. It challenges the NCAA’s ban of players from the CHL’s Western Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. In a separate development, a CHL player verbally committed to play at Arizona State, forcing the issue to the forefront.
