City to start removing items left at Crystal Springs Cemetery

The city of Benton Harbor is about to begin enforcing its policies on decorations allowed at Crystal Springs Cemetery.

Back in August, Interim City Manager Alex Little told city commissioners people leave items on the graves of their loved ones, but sometimes the items really aren’t permitted. The city announced the rules are being reinstated, and Little told commissioners this week the grace period is almost up.

We will be taking those things up that are left and disposing of them,” Little said. “As we indicated when we made the initial announcement, anything still there after October 31, we would assume that people didn’t want them. So we will be getting those things out of there and cleaned up.”

Little said residents who have left keepsakes or mementos at the graves of loved ones need to remove them by the end of the month.

Current city policy does not allow glass objects, small fences, arches, markers, curbing, stones, or other items to be left on cemetery plots.
