The Van Buren County Road Commission is reminding property owners of the rules for placement of political signs near roadways.

The commission says signs placed within a county road right-of-way will be removed. The road commission says such signs may not block a driver’s view, no matter how much you support your candidate.

Van Buren County Road Commission Managing Director Bret Witkowski says political signs can be a real hazard for drivers. He asks everyone to do their part to help keep the roads safe.

Signs placed along roadways in Van Buren County must be placed more than 33 feet from the centerline of the roadway on private property with the landowner’s permission and following local rules. Illegally placed signs may be removed by the road commission at its discretion.

Anyone who believes their sign may have been removed by the road commission is told to contact the agency. Signs not claimed within 14 days of their removal may be thrown away.
