South Haven Mayor: ‘Hate has no place in South Haven’

South Haven Mayor Annie Brown says “hate has no place and will not be tolerated in South Haven” in light of recent racist events.

Last weekend, the South Haven Police Department investigated reports of anti-Semitic flyers distributed in several neighborhoods around the city. We then learned of a second incident involving an anti-Black display in a neighboring township.

In an open letter to the community, Brown says a suspect from outside the community has been identified in the first incident, and the investigation into the second is ongoing.

The Van Buren County Prosecutor is now looking into criminal charges in the two cases.

Brown concludes her letter by saying, “We are a diverse and open community, welcoming to all.” She says incidents like the two reported recently “are unacceptable, and we condemn them in the strongest terms.”
