Lions 42, Seahawks 29 – Jared Goff sets NFL record completing all 18 of his passes in Lions’ 42-29 win
Jared Goff threw a perfect game, setting an NFL record by completing all 18 of his passes to help the Detroit Lions beat the Seattle Seahawks 42-29 Monday night. Goff had a touchdown reception for the first time in his career, catching a pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown. He also threw one of his two touchdown passes to the All-Pro receiver. Goff and St. Brown are the eighth duo in league history to throw and catch a touchdown from each other. St. Brown lobbed a 7-yard pass to Goff on a trick play in the third quarter and caught an 8-yard touchdown from the quarterback in the fourth. The Lions (3-1) asked Goff to throw one more time from his end zone and he was sacked for a safety with 2:01 remaining, cutting their lead to 13 points. The Seahawks (3-1) simply could not overcome an injury-depleted defense that could not stop Detroit on the ground or through the air.
NFL – Bears’ offense starting to show signs of life after running game takes off vs. Rams
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams got off to a slow start but his efficiency as a passer increased greatly once he finally had a running attack to help out in a 24-18 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. The first pick in the NFL draft in April completed 17 of 23 passes for 157 yards with a touchdown to DJ Moore and was backed by 93 yards rushing from D’Andre Swift, who gained more than he had in his first three games combined. The Bears see the complement to the passing game as the key to getting more passes downfield heading into this week’s home game against the Carolina Panthers.

MLB – Tigers go from long shots to among betting favorites entering playoffs
The Tigers didn’t act like a franchise poised to make a playoff run when the trade deadline arrived. Detroit made a series of moves. That included sending pitcher Jack Flaherty to the Dodgers, outfielder Mark Canha to the Giants and reliever Andrew Chafin and catcher Carson Kelly to the Rangers. The Tigers were 52-57 and had an eye on the future. Their long-shot betting odds for this season reflected that thinking. One Caesars Entertainment bettor in Michigan had a different idea and bet the Tigers at 500-1 odds to win the World Series. As in this year.
MLB – Ex-Astros manager A.J. Hinch back in playoffs with Tigers to face former team
A.J. Hinch led Houston to a championship in 2017, and the last time he managed a postseason game it was the Astros’ loss in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series. The following January he was suspended for a year by Major League Baseball and fired the same day for his role in Houston’s sign-stealing scandal. Hinch returns to the playoffs Tuesday with the Detroit Tigers in their first postseason appearance in a decade when they face the AL West champion Astros in Game 1 of a best-of-three Wild Card Series. Detroit ace Tarik Skubal opposes fellow left-hander Framber Valdez in the opener. Hinch, who has managed the Tigers since 2021, insists this series is not about his redemption.
MLB – Pete Rose, baseball’s banned hits leader, has died at age 83
Banished baseball great Pete Rose has died. The longtime Cincinnati Red was the career hits leader and fallen idol who undermined his historic achievements and Hall of Fame dreams by gambling on the game he loved and once embodied. His 4,256 hits broke his hero Ty Cobb’s 4,191 and signified his excellence no matter the notoriety which followed. Rose was banned in 1989 after a major league baseball investigation determined he had bet on baseball, including on his own team. A spokesperson for Clark County in Nevada confirmed on behalf of the medical examiner that Rose had died.

WNBA – WNBA teams allowed to protect up to six players for upcoming expansion draft
The WNBA will have its first expansion draft in 16 years in December as the Golden State Valkyries start to fill out their roster. The Valkyries will begin play in 2025. Teams will be able to protect a maximum of six players who will not be available for selection by Golden State. All other players on a team’s roster will be eligible for selection by the Valkyries. Players that are unrestricted free agents must be designated on a team’s list as such and must be either on the protected players list or the unprotected list.

NHL –Red Wings have fresh faces in effort to end team-record 8-year playoff drought
The Detroit Red Wings are shooting to end their franchise-record playoff drought that has lasted eight years. Detroit lost a tiebreaker for the last spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs last season in coach Derek Lalonde’s second year. The Red Wings signed winger Vladimir Tarasenko off Florida’s Stanley Cup championship team and goaltender Cam Talbot to pair with Ville Husso in net. They retained Patrick Kane with a one-year contract worth up to $6.5 million. Detroit opens the season Oct. 10 at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
NBA – Pistons 2023 1st-round pick Ausar Thompson out of training camp
Detroit Pistons small forward Ausar Thompson is being held out of contact drills at the start of training camp after having a season-ending blood clot during his rookie year. Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said Monday that Thompson is working through a medical process with the NBA and National Basketball Players Association. Langdon said Thompson has been cleared for non-contact drills, conditioning and strength training. Detroit drafted the 6-foot-6 Thompson with the No. 5 overall pick in 2023 out of the Overtime Elite developmental program. He averaged 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 63 games.
NBA – Zach LaVine says he’s healthy, ready to do what Bulls ask of him
Zach LaVine insisted he is healthy and ready to ready to do whatever the Chicago Bulls ask of him this season. Above all, he’s ready to put the drama in the past. The two-time All-Star says he is “in a great situation, a great headspace.” LaVine’s future in Chicago remains a huge question. He was mentioned in trade rumors prior to last season’s deadline, but dealing him is easier said than done. The 29-year-old LaVine is in the middle of a five-year, $215.16 million contract extension he signed after 2021-22 season. He played in just 25 games last season before having season-ending foot surgery.
NBA – Dikembe Mutombo, Hall of Fame player and tireless advocate, dies at 58 from cancer
Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo, one of the best defensive players in NBA history and a longtime global ambassador for the game, died Monday from brain cancer, the league announced. He was 58. His family revealed two years ago that he was undergoing treatment in Atlanta for a brain tumor. The NBA said he died surrounded by his family. Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, who was born in Cameroon, says “it’s a sad day, especially for us Africans, and really the whole world.”
NCAAFB – Purdue fires offensive coordinator
Purdue coach Ryan Walters has fired his offensive coordinator, Graham Harrell, four games into their second season together with the Boilermakers. In making the decision Sunday, Walters acknowledged it was not an easy decision but that he believed Purdue needed to make a change. The Boilermakers have lost three straight games since posting their only win against FCS school Indiana State. Purdue has been outscored 83-17 in the first three quarters of those three losses. Harrell was one of Walters’ first hires after he took the Boilermakers job following the 2022 season. Offensive analyst Jason Simmons has been tabbed to call plays the remainder of the season.
