The Michigan Department of Transportation is moving on to its next phase of its I-94 rebuilding project in Berrien County.
Starting Sunday, MDOT will begin a ramp repaving project that will last about two weeks. Spokesperson Nick Schrippa tells us the westbound I-94 Exit 28 ramp to M-139 in addition to the northbound/southbound M-139 entrance ramp to westbound I-94 will be closed, forcing commuters to take a detoured route.
“During that closure, we’ll be sending folks to Napier Ave, exit 30,” Schirripa said. “So if you’re on 94 and you want to get to M-139, you’re going to go a couple miles past the Napier ramp and move back. Conversely, if you’re on M-139 and want to get on I-94, Napier Avenue is the closest place to get on westbound 94.”
Schirripa says MDOT is getting closer to finishing their work on I-94 this year. This year’s project was from Puertz Road to Washington Avenue. What’s going to happen next?
“Next year in 25, we’re going to be rebuilding 94 from Washington to Empire, as well as the westbound bridge over Pipestone Road. And then flip it around in 26, when we’ll come back and do the eastbound side between Washington and Empire.”
The three-year, $205 million investment is funded in part by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program.
