Parker Meadows hit a broken-bat single in the 10th inning to give Detroit the lead, moments after Trey Sweeney had been given third base because of a balk, and the Tigers went on to beat the Royals 3-1 on Tuesday night. Tyler Holton earned the win by retiring all six Royals he faced, striking out a pair in the ninth to force extra innings. Jason Foley took care of the 10th, earning the save for the second straight night and 25th time this season. Lucas Erceg took the loss for Kansas City. The Tigers remained 1 1/2 games back of the Twins for the final AL wild-card spot. The Royals stayed 2 1/2 games back of Baltimore for the first.
A’s 4, Cubs 3 – Shea Langeliers homers twice as the Oakland A’s edge the Chicago Cubs 4-3
Shea Langeliers homered twice, including a towering solo drive that cleared the Wrigley Field bleachers in left, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3. Langeliers’ third multihomer game of the season and No. 5 for his career upped his season total to 28, extending his career best. Lawrence Butler also went deep for Oakland, which stopped a three-game losing streak. The skid included back-to-back losses to the MLB-worst White Sox. Ian Happ hit two solo homers for the Cubs, who fell six games behind the New York Mets for the final NL wild card with 11 games left.
Angels 5, White Sox 0 – Wagaman, Canning help Angels snap their 6-game losing streak, 5-0 over White Sox
Rookie Eric Wagaman homered for the second straight game, Griffin Canning threw six innings of three-hit ball, and the Los Angeles Angels dealt the Chicago White Sox their 116th loss with a 5-0 victory. The White Sox were trying to equal a season-high, four-game winning streak. Instead, they moved one step closer to the majors’ post-1900 record of 120 losses by the 1962 expansion New York Mets. Chicago is 36-116 with 10 games left. The Angels stopped a six-game slide. They scored in the third through seventh innings and had 10 hits for the first time in five games.

Dream 86, Sky 70 – Charles has 16 points, 14 rebounds to tie WNBA double-double record, Dream beats Sky 86-70
Jordin Canada scored 18 points, Tina Charles finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds to tie the WNBA record with the 193rd double-double of her career and the Atlanta Dream beat the Chicago Sky 86-70 to move into the eighth playoff spot with one game left. Charles matched Sylvia Fowles for the league double-double record. Charles also passed 4,000 rebounds for her career and is two shy of matching Fowles’ league record of 4,016. Charles is the only WNBA player with 7,000 points and 4,000 rebounds in her career. Rachel Banham made six 3-pointers to lead Chicago with 22 points. Chicago played without leading scorer Chennedy Carter (17.5 ppg), who was held out with a foot injury. The Sky have now lost four of five since Angel Reese’s season-ending wrist injury. The rookie was averaging 13.6 points and a league-best 13.1 rebounds per game.
WNBA -WNBA playoff picture starting to come into focus as Liberty clinch top seed
More than half of the WNBA playoff seeds are set with the New York Liberty clinching the No. 1 seed. The Liberty topped the Washington Mystics on Tuesday night to earn homecourt throughout the playoffs for the second time in franchise history. The Minnesota Lynx clinched the No. 2 seed with their victory over Connecticut. Minnesota is the hottest team right now winning 13 of 14 since the Olympic break. They’ll face Phoenix in the opening round of the playoffs which begin Sunday. The final playoff team is still undecided. The Atlanta Dream currently hold the eighth spot after beating Chicago. Washington and the Sky are both a game behind.
NFL -Dolphins place Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve after latest concussion
The Miami Dolphins have placed Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve after the quarterback was diagnosed with his third concussion in two years. Tagovailoa will be sidelined for at least four games. He will be eligible to return in Week 8 when the Dolphins host Arizona, but has to complete a series of tests and assessments required by the NFL’s concussion protocol before he can return to the field. Coach Mike McDaniel has cautioned against speculation on the quarterback’s future, stressing that he’s more focused on Tagovailoa getting healthy than what this latest concussion means for the team or for his career.
NFL – Steelers sticking with Justin Fields at QB while Russell Wilson rehabs calf injury
Justin Fields will likely make his third straight start at quarterback when the Pittsburgh Steelers host the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Mike Tomlin says that Fields will practice with the starters during the early portion of the week while Russell Wilson continues to rehab from a calf injury he aggravated a few days ahead of the season opener earlier this month. Tomlin praised Fields for his decision-making and his demeanor but stopped short of saying Fields would be the full-time starter whenever Wilson is cleared to play.
NCAAFB – The marquee cross-country road trips have begun in the expanded Big Ten
The epic road trips created by the Big Ten’s West Coast expansion are finally here, and they’re creating cool new opportunities for fans all across the continent. Indiana visited UCLA last weekend and brought along thousands of fans eager to see its team at the Rose Bowl. A huge contingent of Southern California fans will invade Ann Arbor this weekend for a game against Michigan, while a slightly smaller group of Northwestern fans will travel all the way to Seattle to see the Wildcats take on Washington. The excitement generated by these suddenly momentous conference games already is proving to be a shot in the arm to Big Ten programs.
NCAA – ACC eyes revenue distribution models that could quell disputes with FSU, Clemson
Atlantic Coast Conference leaders are discussing new ways of divvying up media rights revenue that could potentially resolve legal disputes with Florida State and Clemson. That’s according to two people familiar with the league’s internal talks who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there is no fully formed proposal and a resolution is far from imminent. The discussions internally and with Florida State are an extension of a court-ordered mediation session last month between the conference and the school. FSU’s board of trustees sued the ACC in December, looking for an affordable potential way out of the conference.
NCAA – Tennessee is adding a 10% fee on football game tickets next season to pay players
Tennessee has announced a price hike for football tickets starting in 2025 with most of the increase going specifically to help pay players. The increase announced Tuesday morning in an email to season-ticket holders notes a new 10% talent fee to help pay the proposed revenue share for athletes. Athletic director Danny White explains in a video the price hike at Neyland Stadium will help Tennessee continue attracting and keeping the best athletes. Tennessee has been working to be at the front of the changing landscape supporting athletes since the NCAA changed its rules in 2021 allowing athletes to cash in on their success.
NCAA – Clarifications being made to parts of $2.78B NCAA settlement that dismayed judge
Attorneys negotiating a $2.78 billion settlement of class-action antitrust cases against the NCAA are working to clarify parts of the agreement that a judge wanted addressed before deciding on whether to let the landmark deal move forward. At a hearing two weeks ago, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken declined to grant preliminary approval on the settlement. She expressed dismay with a plan to regulate and potentially restrict third-party name, image and likeness payments to athletes from booster-funded organizations called collectives. Wilken set a Sept. 26 deadline for attorneys to report back to her with certain parts of the settlement agreement reworked.
